Preparing for Your First Filler Appointment

Preparing for Your First Filler Appointment

Getting dermal fillers for the first time can feel both exciting and a little nerve-wracking. At Nurture Wellness & Aesthetics, we want you to feel confident and informed before your appointment. Whether you're considering lip filler, cheek enhancement, or smoothing out lines, here's everything you need to know to prepare and get the best possible results.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable gels — most commonly made from hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance naturally found in your skin — that restore volume, smooth wrinkles, and enhance facial contours. Popular brands include Juvederm, Restylane, and RHA. Each brand offers different formulations designed for specific treatment areas and concerns.

Before Your Appointment

Two Weeks Before

  • Avoid blood-thinning supplements like fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, and St. John's wort
  • Stop taking aspirin or ibuprofen unless medically necessary (consult your doctor first)
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours before your appointment
  • If you have a history of cold sores, ask about antiviral medication

Day Of

  • Come with a clean face, free of makeup
  • Eat a normal meal beforehand — don't come on an empty stomach
  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Bring a list of any medications and supplements you take
  • Have realistic expectations and an open mind for your provider's recommendations

What Happens During Treatment

Your provider will start with a thorough consultation to discuss your goals and create a treatment plan. The treatment area will be cleansed and a topical numbing cream applied (most fillers also contain lidocaine for additional comfort). Using fine needles or cannulas, the filler is precisely injected and gently molded into place.

The entire process typically takes 15-45 minutes depending on the treatment areas. Most patients describe the sensation as mild pressure with minimal discomfort, especially with numbing.

Aftercare Tips

  • Avoid touching or pressing on the treated area for at least 6 hours
  • Skip intense exercise for 24-48 hours
  • Avoid extreme heat (saunas, hot yoga) for 48 hours
  • Sleep on your back if possible for the first night
  • Apply ice gently if you experience swelling
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours after treatment

What to Expect After

Some swelling, redness, and mild bruising are completely normal and typically resolve within a few days to a week. You'll see initial results immediately, but the final result settles in after about 2 weeks once any swelling subsides. Most HA fillers last 6-18 months depending on the product and treatment area.

The Nurture Difference

At Nurture Wellness & Aesthetics, we believe in a "less is more" philosophy. Our goal is to enhance your natural beauty, not change who you are. Your provider will create a customized plan that respects your facial anatomy and achieves results that look refreshed and natural — never overdone. We always prefer a conservative approach and can add more at a follow-up if desired.
