Understanding CO2 Laser Resurfacing: What to Expect

CO2 laser resurfacing is one of the most effective treatments available for improving skin texture, reducing wrinkles, and addressing sun damage. At Nurture Wellness & Aesthetics, our FDA-approved CO2 laser uses carbon dioxide technology to deliver concentrated light energy, precisely removing damaged outer skin layers while stimulating collagen production deeper down. Here's everything you need to know before, during, and after your treatment.

What CO2 Laser Resurfacing Treats

CO2 laser resurfacing is a versatile treatment that addresses a wide range of skin concerns. The laser works by creating controlled micro-injuries that trigger your body's natural healing response, producing fresh collagen and new, healthier skin cells.

  • Fine lines and wrinkles, especially around the eyes and mouth
  • Acne scars and stretch marks
  • Sun damage and age spots
  • Uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation
  • Rough or textured skin
  • Enlarged pores

Treatment Levels: From Cool Peel to Aggressive

Not all CO2 laser treatments are the same. We customize the intensity based on your skin concerns, skin type, and desired downtime. Here's what each level involves:

Cool Peel ($600)

The lightest option, perfect for first-timers or those wanting a refreshed glow with minimal downtime. Expect 1-2 days of redness and a gritty feeling, similar to a mild sunburn. Great for maintaining results between deeper treatments.

Mild Treatment

A step up from the Cool Peel, targeting early signs of aging and light sun damage. Recovery involves 3-5 days of redness and swelling.

Moderate Treatment

For more significant concerns like deeper wrinkles and moderate scarring. Expect 5-10 days of swelling, redness, oozing, then flakiness as the skin heals and reveals fresher layers beneath.

Aggressive Treatment ($1,200-$3,200)

The most transformative option for significant skin damage, deep wrinkles, or pronounced scarring. Plan for 14 days of downtime with potential redness lasting up to 4 weeks. Moderate and aggressive treatments include 6-week skin prep products and a PDGF add-on for optimal healing.

Preparing for Your Treatment

Proper preparation is essential for safe, effective results. We require a 6-week preparation period using the ZO protocol, which includes tretinoin (minimum 0.1%) or ZO retinoids. This primes your skin for optimal healing and results.

Patients with Fitzpatrick skin types 3-6 (those who tan easily or have olive to dark skin tones) must also complete 4 weeks of hydroquinone pre-treatment to minimize the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. We treat all skin types with proper preparation and customized device settings.

What Happens During Treatment

On treatment day, your provider numbs each area with a medicated numbing agent for 45 minutes to an hour. After thorough cleansing, treatment areas are mapped out based on your personalized plan. A cooling device provides additional comfort during the procedure. The actual laser treatment typically takes 15-45 minutes depending on the area and intensity.

Recovery and Results

Recovery varies by treatment intensity, but you can expect some degree of redness, swelling, and peeling as your skin heals. We provide detailed aftercare instructions and are available for any questions during your recovery.

Results typically last several years. Once optimal results are achieved, we recommend annual maintenance treatments to sustain your rejuvenated appearance. Many patients describe the results as transformative, with noticeably smoother, brighter, and more youthful-looking skin.

Side Effects to Be Aware Of

  • Common: Temporary redness, swelling, scabbing, peeling, and dryness
  • Rare: Pigment changes, scarring, or infection (minimized with proper preparation and aftercare)
